● Our Story

Inspired by family. Built on Neighborly care

Age in Place Charlottesville was founded by Tom Sours on a simple belief: growing older shouldn't mean having to leave the home and community you love.

As a Charlottesville native, I've spent my life connected to this community. My wife and I have lived in the Ivy area for more than 25 years, where we've raised our two sons and built strong relationships with neighbors, friends, and local families. Throughout my life, I've found fulfillment in helping others, solving problems, and lending a hand whenever it's needed.

My greatest inspiration, however, comes from caring for my mother.

For more than 20 years, I've helped my mother maintain her independence and continue living in her own home. Fortunately, she lives right next door to me, making it easy to check in regularly, help with household tasks, coordinate appointments, solve unexpected problems, and simply be available when she needs support.

Over the years, I've seen firsthand how meaningful it is for older adults to remain in familiar surroundings. I've also learned how much of a difference small acts of support can make—whether it's helping with errands, maintaining a home, providing companionship, or simply having someone dependable to call.

As I helped my mother navigate the challenges that come with aging, I realized that many families don't have the advantage of living next door. Adult children often live hours away—or across the country—while trying to support aging parents from a distance. Others may live nearby but struggle to balance caregiving responsibilities with work, family, and other commitments.

That's what inspired me to create Age in Place Charlottesville.

My goal is to provide the kind of support I have been able to give my own mother: reliable help, practical assistance, thoughtful communication, and the peace of mind that comes from having a trusted neighbor looking out for you.
